How Much Silver Is in a Silver Dime: 2.25 Grams, Not 2.5

A US dime dated 1964 or earlier contains 2.25 grams of fine silver. The coin weighs 2.500 grams, but the alloy is 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, which leaves 2.25 grams of actual silver, or 0.0723 troy ounces. At the silver spot bid of $66.14 per troy ounce quoted by Kitco at 12:45 p.m. New York time on September 8, 2026, that is $4.78 of silver sitting inside a ten-cent coin. Dimes dated 1965 and later weigh 2.268 grams and contain no silver at all.

The 2.5 grams you get quoted is not the 2.25 you get paid for

Every specification table gives the pre-1965 dime as 2.500 grams. That figure is correct and it is not what a refiner pays you for. Multiply it by the fineness and you get the number that matters: 2.500 × 0.900 = 2.250 grams of silver. The remaining 0.250 grams is copper, and at $6.55 per pound on COMEX on September 7, 2026, that copper is worth about a third of a cent.

Both numbers come out of the same statute, and neither one is printed where you would expect it. The Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 sets the weight in Section 15, and it never mentions the dime's weight directly. It fixes the half dollar at "twelve grams (grammes) and one-half of a gram," then says the quarter dollar and the dime "shall be respectively, one-half and one-fifth of the weight of said half-dollar." One-fifth of 12.5 is 2.5. You have to do the division yourself. The fineness sits two sections earlier, in Section 13: "nine hundred shall be of pure metal and one hundred of alloy; and the alloy of the silver coins shall be of copper."

I spent years proofreading manufacturer sales literature, and this is the same trap that lives in a trim-walk chart. A brochure prints curb weight; the door-jamb label prints gross vehicle weight rating, and only one of those tells you what the axle can carry. My shelf holds 1980s brochures next to configurator printouts from last month, and across forty years the headline number and the load-bearing number are rarely the same number. A coin dealer's board prints 2.5 grams. The wire transfer is calculated on 2.25.

Converting to troy ounces requires one more exact figure. A troy ounce is 480 grains, and a grain has been exactly 0.06479891 grams since the international yard and pound agreement took effect on July 1, 1959, which makes a troy ounce exactly 31.1034768 grams. NIST reproduces that conversion as exact rather than rounded. So 2.25 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.0723380 troy ounces per dime.

How many silver dimes make one troy ounce

Divide 31.1034768 by 2.25 and you get 13.8238. A troy ounce of fine silver is 13.82 pre-1965 dimes, which means you need 14 coins to clear an ounce, and 14 coins actually give you 1.0127 troy ounces.

The number dealers quote instead is per dollar of face value, because face value is what you can count without a scale. Ten dimes make a dollar, so $1 face contains 0.7234 troy ounces as struck. Quarters and half dollars were cut to the same proportion, so the figure holds across all three denominations, which is why bags get priced by face value rather than coin count.

Dealers then knock it down to 0.715 troy ounces per dollar. That 1.2 percent haircut is not a fee. It is worn metal that physically left the coin during sixty to a hundred years of pockets, tills, and vending machines. A $1,000 face bag is advertised at roughly 715 troy ounces for that reason, where the as-struck arithmetic says 723. Sellers of lightly circulated coins lose about eight ounces of credit per bag to a convention built for average wear.

At $66.14 per troy ounce, the ladder runs like this:

  1. One dime: 0.0723 troy ounces, $4.78
  2. Fourteen dimes: 1.0127 troy ounces, $66.98
  3. Ten dimes ($1 face): 0.7234 troy ounces, $47.85
  4. Fifty dimes (one standard roll, $5 face): 3.6170 troy ounces, $239.23
  5. One hundred dimes ($10 face): 7.2339 troy ounces, $478.45, or $472.90 using the worn 0.715 convention

The 1965 dime: same diameter, same reeds, no silver

The Coinage Act of 1965, Public Law 89-81, was signed on July 23, 1965, and it removed silver from the dime and the quarter outright. Section 101 required that any coin minted under it be a clad coin whose cladding weighs at least 30 percent of the whole. Johnson called it the first fundamental change to American coinage in 173 years, and for the dime that is not rhetoric. The metal had contained silver continuously since 1796.

The current specification is federal law rather than Mint policy. Title 31 of the US Code, Section 5112(a)(4), defines "a dime coin that is 0.705 inch in diameter and weighs 2.268 grams." Subsection (b) describes the sandwich: "The half dollar, quarter dollar, and dime coins are clad coins with 3 layers of metal. The 2 identical outer layers are an alloy of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. The inner layer is copper." Averaged across the whole coin, that comes to 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel.

Nothing else moved. The diameter is identical, 0.705 inch being 17.91 millimetres, the same as the silver coin it replaced. Both types carry 118 reeds. Roosevelt's portrait and the torch reverse stayed exactly where they were. Congress changed the composition and left the appearance alone, which is precisely the change a hoarder would not notice across a counter and a vending machine would not reject.

That leaves weight and edge colour as the only tells. A silver dime is 2.500 grams against the clad coin's 2.268, a gap of 0.232 grams, or 9.3 percent. Stand the coin on edge and the clad one shows a copper stripe between two grey layers; the silver one shows a continuous pale rim.

The metal value gap is the part people underestimate. Copper at $6.55 per pound and nickel at $16,811 per tonne, both as of the first week of September 2026, put the raw metal in a clad dime at roughly 3.3 cents. The silver dime's $4.78 is about 145 times that.

There is one wrinkle a model year will not resolve, and it is why I photograph the build label inside the door of every car my family owns rather than trusting the badge on the tailgate. Market names and build data disagree, and midyear running changes are where the disagreement gets expensive. The Mint did the same thing in 1965. It kept striking 1964-dated silver dimes into 1966 while clad coins were already in production, and removed mintmarks from circulating coins from 1965 through 1967 to discourage collectors from picking through change. The date on the coin tells you the composition. The year it was struck does not.

Which dime years have 90 percent silver content

Silver dimes are not one specification. They are four, and only the last one is the familiar 2.5-gram coin. Every fine-silver column below is gross weight multiplied by fineness, and every melt figure uses the same $66.14 spot.

Read the first two rows together, because they are the best argument I know for ignoring printed fineness. Before 1837 the standard was 1485/1664 parts silver, which is 89.24 percent, on a heavier 41.6-grain coin. The Act of January 18, 1837 raised fineness to a clean 90 percent and cut the weight to 41.25 grains. Both published numbers changed. The silver did not move at all: 41.6 grains at .8924 and 41.25 grains at .900 both yield 37.125 grains of pure silver. Congress rewrote the spec sheet and delivered identical metal, which is why no revaluation was needed when the new coins circulated.

The 1853 row is the one that costs money if you assume it away. Silver had climbed high enough that a dime was worth more melted than spent, so Congress cut the weight to 38.4 grains, and the Mint put small arrowheads beside the date so the reduced coins could be identified. An arrows dime from 1853 to 1855 holds 2.239 grams of silver rather than 2.250. That is half a percent, negligible on one coin and real on a jar.

Two categories break the 1965 rule in the other direction. From 1992 through 2018 the Mint struck 90 percent silver Roosevelt dimes for its annual Silver Proof Sets, carrying an S mintmark and never released into circulation. Then the FAST Act, Public Law 114-94, signed December 4, 2015, changed the statutory requirement from "90 percent silver" to "not less than 90 percent," and from 2019 the Mint switched those proof coins to .999 fine silver. A 2019-or-later silver proof dime holds 2.4975 grams, which is 0.0803 troy ounces, about 11 percent more silver than a 1964 dime. The 2005 silver proof set dime and the 2005-P circulation dime look like the same coin, and only one is bullion. The S mintmark will not settle it either, because those years also produced clad proof dimes carrying the same mark. Weigh it: 2.500 grams is silver, 2.268 is not.

How to check a jar of dimes without guessing

Do the dates first, because it costs nothing. Anything dated 1965 or later goes in the spend pile unless it has an S mintmark and a mirror finish, in which case it came out of a proof set and belongs in the appraise pile.

Then weigh. I did mine on a warm overcast morning at the kitchen table, the kind of slow grey light that makes you willing to read the display twice before writing anything down. Reading twice matters, because a $15 jeweller's scale reading to 0.01 grams sits comfortably inside the 0.232-gram gap between the two coin types, and drift or a draught is the only thing that can put you on the wrong side of it. Weigh sealed rolls the same way. Fifty silver dimes weigh 125.0 grams, fifty clad dimes weigh 113.4 grams, and 11.6 grams per roll is a difference you can read through paper wrapping.

Then multiply. Count the silver coins and multiply by 0.0723 troy ounces, or take face value times 0.715 if the coins are genuinely worn, then multiply by the day's spot price.

One correction on quantities, because the mismatch shows up constantly in listings. A standard US roll of dimes is 50 coins and $5.00 of face value, not $10.00. The $10 roll belongs to quarters, which come 40 to a roll, and half dollars, which come 20. A dealer advertising "$10 face value" in dimes means 100 coins, or two rolls, holding 7.2339 troy ounces as struck.

When the coin is worth more than the silver in it

Melt value is a floor. It is the number below which no coin can fall, and it says nothing about the ceiling.

A 1916-D Mercury dime had a mintage of 264,000, cut short when Denver shifted to quarter production, and even a well-worn one starts around $900 to $1,000. A 1894-S Barber dime is one of 24 struck, of which nine are known to survive, and examples trade in seven figures. The 1942 over 1941 overdate Mercury dimes carry strong premiums in any grade. All of those contain the same $4.78 of silver as a common 1962 Roosevelt.

The sharpest illustration holds no silver whatsoever. A 1975 proof Roosevelt dime that left San Francisco without its S mintmark sold for $506,250 at GreatCollections on October 27, 2024, graded PCGS Proof-67. Two are known out of 2.84 million proof sets. It is a copper-nickel clad coin, worth about three cents as metal, and it outsold its own melt value by roughly fifteen million times.

My method stops at the scale. Dating a statute, identifying the specification in force, and finding a second document will tell you what metal you are holding and what it is worth on a given afternoon. It will not tell you whether a mintmark is genuine, whether the surfaces have been cleaned, or whether the bands on a Mercury dime are fully separated, and those three questions can move a price by four figures. Sort by date and weight yourself. Hand anything scarce, anything before 1916, and anything too sharp for its age to a professional grader before it goes near a melting pot.
