How Many Electric Motors Does the Solterra Have? Always Two

Every Subaru Solterra sold in the United States has two electric motors: one driving the front axle, one driving the rear. That holds for every trim in every model year, from the 2023 launch car through the redesigned 2026 model. Subaru's own 2023 specification sheet describes the drivetrain as "front and rear AC synchronous permanent-magnet motors, integral transaxles and power inverters," rated at 80 kW each for 215 horsepower combined. The 2026 car keeps two motors and raises the combined figure to 233 horsepower on Premium and Limited, or 338 horsepower on the XT trims. Subaru has never listed a single-motor, front-wheel-drive Solterra for the American market.

Where the two motors sit and what they replace

Each motor arrives as a self-contained e-axle unit: motor, single-ratio reduction transaxle and power inverter in one package, bolted to the axle it drives. The 2023 spec sheet puts the reduction ratio at 13.8:1 at both ends. Nothing mechanical joins the front unit to the rear one. No driveshaft runs down the tunnel, no transfer case, no center differential. Subaru's wording for the all-wheel-drive system on that sheet is exact about the arrangement: "Electronic Power-Controlled Variable Power Distribution via independent front and rear electric motors."

That layout is why the answer is two and not one. A gasoline Outback carries a single engine and a mechanical driveline that distributes torque to four corners. The Solterra has no such driveline, so each driven axle needs its own motor. Two driven axles, two motors, 249 lb-ft combined on the first-generation car. Subaru's September 2025 pricing release states the 338-horsepower XT reaches 60 mph in less than five seconds.

Why the intuitive guess misses

Two guesses come naturally, and both fail here.

The first is the engine analogy: one engine per car, therefore one motor per car. The second is the trim ladder, which is a better guess because it describes most of the EV market. Buy the base Ioniq 5, the base Mustang Mach-E, the base Equinox EV or the base Ariya and you get one motor; pay more and a second one appears. Applied to a $38,495 Solterra Premium, that reasoning predicts a cheap front-driver. It predicts wrong.

Subaru's September 2025 pricing release makes the point in numbers. Premium opens at $38,495, Limited at $41,395, Limited XT at $42,895 and Touring XT at $45,555. Across that $7,060 span the motor count never moves. What the XT money buys is uprated motors at both ends rather than an additional one, so the trim ladder that reliably predicts drivetrain layout at other brands predicts nothing here.

The reason is brand architecture rather than engineering. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is the thing Subaru sells, and a single-motor Solterra would be a front-wheel-drive Subaru. Until the 2026 Uncharted Premium arrived with one 221-horsepower motor at $34,995, Subaru had not sold a front-wheel-drive vehicle in the US in roughly three decades. The Solterra was never going to be the model that broke that.

The Uncharted matters to the guess in a second way. It proves Subaru will now build and sell a single-motor front-driver in the US, and Subaru still did not do that with the Solterra when the all-new 2026 car gave it the opening. Two motors on every Solterra survived a clean-sheet redesign, which makes it a safe assumption for the next few model years rather than a quirk of the launch car.

The guess is not wrong everywhere, which is the part worth knowing before you argue with a salesperson. Subaru Japan's configurator lists the Solterra ET-SS in front-wheel-drive form with a single 150 kW motor. On pre-facelift Japanese cars that front-drive version even carried a different pack: 71.4 kWh against the all-wheel-drive car's 72.8 kWh. I keep the Japanese price list beside the American spec sheet for exactly this reason. Same badge on the tailgate, different hardware underneath, and only one of those documents describes what a US dealer can order.

The battery and charging figures that come with two motors

The 2026 Solterra runs a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery, up from 72.8 kWh, according to Subaru's September 2025 pricing release. That release also confirms the uprated 11 kW onboard charger, replacing the 6.6 kW unit, and DC fast charging at up to 150 kW with battery preconditioning. The port is now NACS, moved to the passenger side, with a CCS adapter included.

Three Subaru documents give three different answers for the DC charging window, which is the kind of discrepancy worth flagging rather than smoothing over. The debut press release says 10% to 80% in "less than 35 minutes." The pricing release published weeks later says "approximately 30 minutes." Subaru.com's 2026 features page says "about 28 minutes." Plan your stop around 30 to 35 minutes and treat 28 as the best case on a warm, preconditioned pack.

Subaru publishes no hours-to-full figure for Level 2 on the 2026 car. The arithmetic is straightforward: 74.7 kWh at the full 11 kW rate is 6.8 hours before conversion losses, and a common 40-amp home unit delivering 9.6 kW puts you closer to eight. That number is my calculation, not a Subaru claim. The older sheet is explicit where the new material stays quiet: 9 hours on a 240-volt, 32-amp Level 2 connection, and 80% on DC in about 56 minutes.

The first generation's 100 kW ceiling was not arbitrary either. The 2023 sheet lists the pack at 355.2 volts and 201 Ah, and charging power is voltage multiplied by current, so a 355-volt pack has to pull close to 280 amps to reach 100 kW. The 800-volt Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 reach much higher figures at lower current, which is the whole argument for their architecture. Subaru has not published a pack voltage for 2026, but hitting 150 kW means more current and more heat, which is why the system that warms the battery before a fast-charge stop is now built into the car rather than left to the driver to improvise.

How the Solterra compares with single-motor front-wheel-drive EVs

The cleanest comparison available uses cars that share the identical 74.7-kWh pack, so the only real variable is how many motors are attached to it.

The second motor costs roughly 20 to 26 EPA miles on the same energy. It buys traction at both axles and 8.3 inches of ground clearance that a front-driver in this class rarely matches. The 2023 sheet lists what depends on commanding the axles independently: Dual-Function X-MODE with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, Grip Control, Downhill Assist Control and Hill-Start Assist. It costs mass too. That sheet puts the Premium at 4,365 pounds and the Touring at 4,505.

Inside the Solterra range, something less obvious happens. The 233-hp Limited and the 338-hp Limited XT are both EPA-rated at 278 miles. The 288-mile figure belongs to the Premium, which rides on 18-inch wheels while the others wear 20s. The extra 105 horsepower costs nothing in the EPA cycle; the wheels cost ten miles. The same pattern showed up in 2023, when the Premium's 228 miles fell to 222 on the Limited and Touring for the same reason.

My own read: if range per dollar is what you are shopping for, the front-drive Uncharted is the better buy, and the Solterra's second motor is precisely what you are paying the difference for. Buyers in Vermont and Colorado tend to consider that money well spent. Buyers in Phoenix should think harder.

How to confirm the motor count on a specific car

Used listings copy each other, and a 2023 listing that says "AWD system" tells you nothing about how many motors produce it. Four checks settle it in about five minutes:

  1. Read the drivetrain line on the Monroney window sticker. Every US-market Solterra reads all-wheel drive; there has never been a front-drive American listing to confuse it with.
  2. Run the VIN through the NHTSA VIN decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov, which returns drive type and electrification level from the manufacturer's own filing rather than from a dealer's description.
  3. Look between the rear wheels. The rear e-axle unit is visible from behind the car; on a front-drive version of this platform, that space is empty.
  4. Match the build date on the driver's door jamb label against that model year's specification sheet, because the outputs changed while the motor count did not.

I photograph that door-jamb label whenever the paperwork and the badge disagree, which is more often than it should be. The label is dated and stamped at the factory. A brochure is a marketing document that may describe three markets at once.

Questions people actually ask

Why is the Solterra so cheap?

Depreciation and incentives, mostly. CarEdge projects about 60% value loss over five years, and Kelley Blue Book shows 2024 cars down roughly 58% in two. Subaru also held the 2026 starting price at $38,495 after the federal clean vehicle credit ended for cars acquired after September 30, 2025.

What EVs should I stay away from?

Skip model-name blacklists and check four numbers instead: peak DC charging power, whether battery preconditioning is standard, the port type, and the battery warranty terms. Anything capped near 50 to 100 kW without preconditioning will punish you on road trips. The 2023 Solterra's 56-minute charge to 80% is the cautionary example.

How long will a Solterra battery last?

Subaru's Battery and Electric Drive Unit Limited Warranty covers the pack for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with retention of 70% or more of original capacity. The coverage transfers to later owners. Subaru states that gradual capacity loss is normal wear rather than a defect.

Is Solterra discontinued?
