Can You Use Expired Toothpaste? The Easiest Check First

Yes, you can brush with expired toothpaste, as long as the tube is intact and the paste looks and smells the way it should. Under the FDA's expiration-dating rule at 21 CFR 211.137, that printed date marks the last day the manufacturer's own testing supports the labeled strength. The American Dental Association's 2025 Seal requirements ask that at least 90% of the labeled fluoride still be available in samples aged to the end of that period. Past the date, nobody has measured your particular tube. An intact expired tube will clean your teeth tonight. It is a weak plan for the next six weeks, and a tube with a broken seal, a watery rim, an odd smell, or a color change goes in the bin whatever the date says.

The easiest check before you commit: one bead on a white plate

I edit use directions for self-tanners, a different shelf entirely. What carries over is one habit: before trusting what a label promises, look at what came out of the tube. In self-tan work that means a white towel, and we call it a transfer test. The toothpaste version needs a white plate and ninety seconds.

  1. Squeeze a pea-sized bead onto a white saucer and leave it for one minute.
  2. Look for a clear or watery rim creeping out from the base of the bead. That halo is phase separation, and it means the emulsion has given up.
  3. Put your nose close to it. Sour, rancid, or chemically wrong is a stop signal on its own.
  4. Press the bead flat with the back of a spoon. Grit, hard specks, or a chalky crumble mean the abrasive system has clumped.
  5. Then look at the tube: crusted cap threads, a split crimp, or a foil membrane already broken on a tube you have never opened.

Pass all four and the tube is fine for tonight. Fail one and no expiration date rescues it, because a stamped date describes a sealed tube stored properly and knows nothing about the two summers yours spent in a glovebox. This check outranks the date, and it is the only inspection here that requires no reading.

What the printed date on a toothpaste tube actually guarantees

Fluoride toothpaste is an over-the-counter drug in the United States because it makes a cavity-prevention claim. That puts it under the FDA's anticaries monograph at 21 CFR 355.10, which fixes the permitted actives: sodium fluoride at 0.188 to 0.254 percent in a paste, delivering at least 650 ppm of available fluoride ion; stannous fluoride at 0.351 to 0.474 percent; sodium monofluorophosphate at 1.153 percent with at least 1,275 ppm combined. Your Drug Facts panel names one. A standard supermarket tube reads "sodium fluoride 0.24%," about 1,100 ppm of fluorine.

Being a drug is why the date exists. 21 CFR 211.137 requires an expiration date set by stability testing, and the enforcement discretion FDA extends to some OTC products applies only where the labeling carries no dosage limitations and the product is stable for three years. Toothpaste carries dosage limitations: 21 CFR 355.50 requires directions saying children under 2 should consult a dentist and children under 6 need supervision. So the date gets printed.

What it certifies is narrow, and the ADA's 2025 Acceptance Program Requirements for fluoride dentifrices spell it out. At least 90% of the labeled amount of fluoride must be available in both fresh and aged samples, where aged samples are defined as "product compositions at the effective end of their expiration period." A second criterion requires at least 80% released within one minute of a 1:4 dilution. Both tests run up to the date. Colgate's own consumer guidance puts the window at two years maximum. Nothing is scheduled to happen the following morning. The measurement simply stops.

"The fluoride breaks down" is the wrong sentence for a real problem

The most common answer online says expired fluoride toothpaste is unsafe because the fluoride has broken down. Fluoride is an element. It does not decompose on a bathroom shelf, and no version of this story ends in poisoning.

Something real does sit underneath the claim, and it concerns availability rather than decomposition. In formulations that pair sodium monofluorophosphate with a calcium carbonate abrasive, the fluoride ion gradually precipitates as insoluble calcium fluoride and stops being available to your enamel. The numbers come from Conde and colleagues, reported in a 2025 stability review by Lotif and co-authors in the International Journal of Dentistry: those MFP and calcium-carbonate pastes already carried 17% insoluble fluoride at the moment of purchase, rising to 40% after twelve months stored at 28.9°C. The same review notes that a dentifrice needs at least 1,000 ppm of soluble fluoride to reach its full effect against caries.

So the honest answer depends on what your tube is made of. A sodium fluoride paste in a silica base, the common build in the United States, has no calcium abrasive to scavenge the ion. An MFP paste with a chalk abrasive has a documented route to losing some. Neither turns dangerous. One quietly gets weaker, and the label will not tell you by how much.

Condition and active ingredient are the two axes. A tube one year past its expiration date that has sat sealed in a cool cupboard beats an in-date tube that split open in a gym bag.

There is a temptation here I want to name, because I published its equivalent and had to correct it. In an early self-tan guide I told readers to exfoliate twice before reapplying over an uneven patch. Scrubbing harder felt like it should compensate. It deepened the patch. The toothpaste version is brushing longer or harder to make up for a paste you suspect has weakened. Abrasion does not substitute for an active ingredient. ANSI/ADA Standard No. 130 and ISO 11609 cap dentifrice abrasivity at an RDA of 250, a ceiling that assumes normal technique. Brush your usual two minutes with the old tube and buy a new one.

Could an old tube poison anyone?

The regulation already answered this at the design stage. 21 CFR 355.10 caps a dentifrice package at 276 mg of total fluorine, precisely because accidental ingestion was considered when the monograph was written. Gary Whitford's 1992 paper in the Journal of Dental Research set the probably toxic dose at 5 mg of fluoride per kilogram of body weight, and his own worked example is that a 10-kg child would need to swallow about 1.8 ounces of a 900 to 1,100 ppm paste to reach it. A pea-sized amount, which the ADA puts at roughly 0.25 g of paste and 0.25 mg of fluoride, is not in that conversation. Age changes none of these figures, because none of them depend on the date.

One packaging detail matters before you judge a seal. 21 CFR 211.132 requires tamper-evident packaging for OTC drug products and explicitly exempts dentifrices, along with dermatologicals, insulin, and lozenges. The foil membrane under your cap is a manufacturer's choice. Its absence on a new tube is a question about that brand's packaging, while a punctured membrane on a tube you never opened is a question about that tube.

Storage tells you more than the calendar does

Check the "other information" line on the carton. Sensodyne's Drug Facts label on DailyMed reads "do not store above 30°C (86°F)," and pharmaceutical storage generally assumes USP controlled room temperature of 20 to 25°C, with excursions tolerated to 30°C. Colgate says that at hotter temperatures the ingredients can separate and begin to liquefy. The stability study above ran at 28.9°C, close to that bound, and still lost soluble fluoride over a year.

A car interior in July clears 30°C by mid-morning, and so does a suitcase left on asphalt. A travel tube that rode through two summers in a glovebox is a worse bet than an unopened tube one year past its date in a hallway cupboard, though only one of them carries an expired stamp. Knowing when you opened a tube is useful, but keep that separate from the printed date, which describes an unopened product under proper storage.

When to replace it, and when to ask a dentist

Replace the tube if it fails any step of the plate check, if you cannot find a date on it, or if you know it spent a season somewhere hot. Replace it anyway if it is your only paste and a fresh one is more than a few weeks away. A new tube costs little against a guaranteed 1,100 ppm.

Ask a dentist rather than the internet if you have active decay, dry mouth from medication, orthodontic appliances, or a history of frequent cavities. A stretch of weakened fluoride matters more there than for an average adult, and a prescription-strength paste may be the better answer anyway. If a child swallows a large amount from any tube, expired or not, the Drug Facts warning required by 21 CFR 355.50 says what to do: get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Is it okay to use 2-year-old toothpaste?

Usually yes, if the tube is sealed, undamaged, and the paste passes a look-and-smell check. Two years is roughly the shelf life Colgate says manufacturers support, so a tube at that age sits at the edge of its tested window rather than beyond it. Expect full cleaning and slightly less certainty about fluoride strength.

Is it okay to use 10-year-old toothpaste?

Brushing with it once will not hurt you, but do not rely on it. Nobody holds stability data covering a decade, and formulations combining monofluorophosphate with a calcium carbonate abrasive can lose a large share of their soluble fluoride within the first year.
