Blu-ray uses a shorter beam so the pits can sit closer together. A 650 nm spot cannot resolve 405 nm pits. Firmware cannot invent a diode the sled does not have. I learned the expensive version on a race weekend when I split a camera shell with an overtightened mount instead of reading the vibration. The connector accepted the camera. The recording was still empty. Cleaning the disc, updating the 360 dashboard, or hanging a USB Blu-ray enclosure on the console will not grow a 405 nm pickup inside a DVD mechanism.

What happens when you put a Blu-ray disc in an Xbox 360?

The realistic outcome is a failed read. A dead console is the story people invent.

Xbox Support's disc-drive page for Xbox 360 documents two dashboard strings for a disc the drive cannot complete: "This disc is unreadable" and "Unrecognized disc." I have not found a Microsoft advisory that a pressed Blu-ray destroys the 360 laser. A warped disc, a disc left in a paper sleeve, or a disc shoved past a sticky tray is a separate mechanical problem. Those jam any drive. The format mismatch shows up as an error, then an evening spent polishing a disc that was never going to play.

HD DVD movies fail the internal drive for the same class of reason. Microsoft sold an external USB accessory for that format. Dropping an HD DVD into the 360's own tray was the wrong slot then.

If the dashboard throws unreadable or unrecognized media on a disc with a Blu-ray logo, stop. Eject it. The 360 is telling you the truth about its laser.

Xbox Series X, on Microsoft Store spec sheets, lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive. Xbox Series S has no optical drive. A disc-free sibling is as blind to Blu-ray as a 360, for a different reason: there is no sled at all.

I prefer the table to a rumor that a dashboard update will unlock Blu-ray on a 360. Wavelength lives in a diode. A store tile will not grow one. Clean DVD playback on a 360 can hide that fact the same way clean FPV can hide a badly tuned quad.

What should I use to play the Blu-ray my 360 will not read?

A 360 still earns its keep as a DVD-Video box and as a machine for Xbox 360 game discs. ECMA-267's 4.7 Gbyte single-layer and 8.5 Gbyte dual-layer figures are the ceiling of that library. Keep the 360 for the red-laser stack. Give the blue-violet disc to hardware that lists 405 nm.
